The inaugural Salon event for the BA Fine Art programme at University Campus Barnsley opens tomorrow, as students we are so fortunate to live in modern times with access to social media, these type of exhibitions have gained in their importance and audience. Where in the past the audience would have been limited, invitations would have been sent to a much reduced network of artists and industry professionals, from the local area, technology has made it possible to reach a potential world audience.

The handheld computer in your pocket has access to thousands of galleries, curators, art groups, and associations via social media platforms, giving us the opportunity to live feed, instant share, and direct communication with interested people, we may never have met in person. Too few realise the hidden potential in reaching out across these platforms and the opportunities that can open up through their use.

So what is a "Salon" ?

A salon event is where students are encouraged to show their progressing work, unresolved themes or projects in planning, opportunity to sell work completed in semester one but also to gain valuable feedback on these works and projects from art professionals and potential customers. A chance to promote their artistic identity in their chosen medium, talk to other artists, curators, and collectors of art work.

"The Salon was always an experimental, unpolished event where artists downed their tools and invited the public to see what they were up to. This is no exception. The salon is designed to see who is coming through the ranks of our degree programme with an opportunity to engage and discuss their work, offer feedback, support and guidance, satisfy a curiosity, be part of a community of artists and celebrate the necessity of making."

This inaugural Salon will be one to remember and a learning curve for all tutors, students and team of admins that have contributed in meetings and pooling creative suggestions to bring this to fruition.

Work will be available to view until Friday 1st of February 2019, and will serve to whet the appetites for the End of Year Exhibitions coming up in May/June 2019. Please stay tuned and watch this space....
